Music and movies at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival

By

Summer is half way over, but the BRIC Celebrate Brookyln! Festival is not settling down just yet. With over a week and six free shows left this summer, take advantage of the warm weather and head out to the Prospect Park Bandshell for a free concert under the stars. There is a variety of performances ranging from Music & Movie nights to African favorite Youssou N’Dour between now and August 12.

On Friday, August 4, Brooklyn collective Wordless Music Orchestra will provide the live score for the movie Creed, a story of underdogs and redemption, as part of the Festival’s Music & Movies series. This orchestra has gained notoriety for its unconventional programming by blurring the lines between contemporary classical music, indie rock, and electronica, and will be led by the film’s composer, Ludwig Goransson.

The second Music & Movie night will be on Thursday, August 10, at 7:30PM. MacArthur “genius” and jazz luminary Jason Moran joins Wordless Music Orchestra to provide an original live score for 2014’s Selma. Youngsters Brooklyn United Marching Band will start off the night.

The BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival has saved the best for last! There are several other shows to look forward to, including on Thursday, August 3, when legendary jazz fusionists Béla Fleck & The Flecktones will be performing along with chanteuse pianist-songwriter Nellie McKay. And on Saturday, August 5, Nels Cline takes the stage performing songs from his latest album, Lovers, where he tackles a combination of originals and American Songbook standards in a big-band jazz setting. Folk singer Sam Amidon starts off the night at 7:30PM.
