Your guide to this season’s holiday markets

By

Spending most of December running all over the city (or the internet) trying to find that absolutely perfect gift for the people you love definitely puts the pressure barometer at “strong.” Unless you’re just an excellent gift-giver in which case…you’re already winning.

As for the rest of us, we’re just lucky to live in New York, a city that definitely doesn’t suffer from a shortage of places to shop. Here at Brooklyn Based we’re all for those holiday markets. Whether you’re with your kids or your friends, an entire afternoon can be made strolling across a warm hall, hot chocolate in hand, perusing hundreds of locally made goods. Seriously, what’s not to love?

Below, we’ve compiled a list of upcoming holiday markets that you should definitely check out, if having fun (and even eating tasty treats!) while shopping is your thing.

Passerbuys Holiday Market: Dec. 2-3, 12-6pm, Space Ninety 8

This weekend, head to Urban Outfitters’ Space Ninety 8 to peruse gifts under $100 from companies like Floss Gloss, Society6, and Tuza. Don’t get too shocked when you spot the complimentary Ovenly treats, and a hair bar!

Oddities Flea Market: Dec. 2-3, 12-6pm, Brooklyn Bazaar, $5

Curated by Ryan Matthew Cohn, the Oddities Flea Market will have no shortage of one of a kind jewelry, anatomical curiosities, and taxidermy. It’s exactly the kind of market you go to under the guise of gift giving, when all you want is an amazing new tchotchke for your collection of very, very random things.

Fad Market: Dec. 2-3, 11-7pm, Brooklyn Historical Society

If you’ve never been to the Brooklyn Historical Society, a stunning Renaissance-style piece of architecture in Brooklyn Heights, the Fad Market is your perfect excuse to go. From home furnishings to bath and body care, Fad will feature over 40 designers for you to peruse in, in beautiful surroundings to boot.

SolStreet Popup Holiday MarketDec. 8-10, 11-6pm, Berg’n

Beer and sustainable fashion? Did you know the two go hand in hand? We didn’t, but now that we’re thinking about it, we’re super into those vibes. SolStreet will be at Berg’n with some effortlessly cool clothing, ceramics, and home decor.

BUST Craftacular and School for Creative Living: Dec. 9-10, 11am-7pm, Brooklyn Expo Center

NYC’s longest-running indie craft fair has added a “School For Creative Living” featuring talks by prominent feminists, female-fronted music acts and a hundred plus wellness and crafting classes.

Greenpointers Winter Candyland Holiday Market: Dec. 10, 1-7pm, Greenpoint Loft

Of course, it’s not a holiday season without Greenpointers’ winter-perfect holiday market! It’s always our favorite Sunday afternoon activity in December, full of live music and fun festivities, not to mention the Greenpoint Loft rooftop has one of our favorite views of the hood. Grab a donut and take your time ooh-ing and aah-ing at curated pottery, clothing, jewelry, and more.

Sugar x Spice Holiday Makers Market: Dec. 17, 1-6pm, Brooklyn Bazaar

It’s quite possible that we’ve saved the best for last. Sugar x Spice will have a full bar, tarot card readings, a dance performance, and a winter wonderland photo booth. You’ll probably have such a ball that you’ll feel slightly less guilty for having left all of your shopping till the last minute.

Happy shopping, Brooklyn!
