On a chilly afternoon a few years back, some friends invited me to watch a double feature of that season’s Oscar-nominated short films (both animated and live action) and it was somewhat of a revelation. Before that, I had always snoozed through that section of the award ceremony and assumed you had to be an Arquette or Coppola in order to have any clue as to what was going on. Not so! In fact, you can watch all of the nominated works in just a couple of hours, and it’s hard to imagine how you’d be exposed to a more diverse array of talent and creativity in such a short amount of time. This year, Alamo Drafthouse is screening the shorts, so you can enhance the experience with some of that ridiculously delicious popcorn they serve. On Friday night, the live action program starts at 6:10pm, and is followed by the animated shorts at 8:50pm, leaving you some time in between to indulge in a Hard Times Sundaes burger (or whatever your preference is) in DeKalb Market Hall. Tickets to each show are $16 each.
