Head to the Prospect Park Bandshell this weekend to enjoy several free performances as part of the summer-long BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, including the first Music & Movies presentation of the summer.
Melding Indian raga with other world music influences and electronica beats, the sitar master Anoushka Shankar’s sound honors tradition while boldly embracing the future. The daughter of the late Ravi Shankar and half-sister of Norah Jones, presents her latest project, Land of Gold, on Friday, July 20. The project veers sonically away from her classical side and takes on the subject matter of the global refugee crisis. Opening the show that evening is indie experimentalist Shara Nova, who brings a brand new lineup of her band, My Brightest Diamond, to the Bandshell in advance of a new record out this fall.
On Saturday, July 21, head to the Bandshell for a screening and live orchestral score of Brimstone & Glory, a documentary from the creative team behind Beasts of the Southern Wild about the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico. BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival favorites Wordless Music Orchestra return to provide the percussive accompaniment to the movie and Sonido Gallo Negro opens with the mystique and mysticism of 1960s Peruvian cumbia.
