Pen America Fest kicks off with ‘The Laws of Desire’

By

Monday is the first night of the Pen America World Voices Festival, a weeklong series of readings, panels, and other events that draw literary icons from all over the globe to discuss issues related to human rights, which was previewed in our May Culture Calendar. It looks like the conversation about Education between Tara Westover and the author of Pachinko, the other book that everyone I know read this year, is sold out, but I bet that it’s somehow possible to wrangle your way in. If not, consider checking out “The Laws of Desire,” a panel about sexual identity featuring New Yorker writer Masha Gessen, former war correspondent and memoirist Carolin Emcke, French novelist Edouard Louis, and MacArthur “Genius” Grant winning choreographer, director, and writer Bill T. Jones, at Cooper Union. The talk begins at 7pm and tickets are $25 each. You should review the entire list of engaging and inspiring events on the festival schedule over the next several days to see if anything else floats your boat.
