Calling all mermaids and mermen

The perennially fabulous and delightfully bizarre Mermaid Parade will march down Surf Ave. in Coney Island once again this Saturday afternoon, starting at 1pm. If you’ve never been, now’s your chance to take part in this beloved and pure Brooklyn summer tradition that is inspiring if only for the degree to which people get really into it. Whether you decide to dress up yourself or take a more passive spectator role, get ready for all the body glitter, seashells, classic cars, green wigs, tats, pasties (yep, it’s a thing), and tridents you can handle. Arlo and Nora Guthrie will preside over the 37th annual parade as King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, and the afternoon will end with a Beach Ceremony, as it always does, to celebrate the official beginning of the summer swimming season.
