Our 2019 Brooklyn outdoor movie calendar

You know we’ve hit peak summer when there is an outdoor movie to see in NYC any night of the week. Mid-July, once the fireworks are over, is typically when the al fresco screenings ramp up, especially when Brooklyn Bridge Park opens its lawn to moviegoers. This season marks the 20th anniversary of its Movies with a View series, and in celebration, their volunteer film committee chose films from previous seasons, including rained out screenings that are getting a second chance this year, whose theme is “Better the Second Time Around.”

All of the films they chose contain the qualities of the perfect outdoor movie, says Nancy Webster, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. “Nice weather, good friends, pre-show entertainment, delicious food and drink, lush surroundings, and beautiful views all contribute to an enchanting experience for the public. Films that audiences already know and love, such as cult classics, work particularly well, as well as movies that have vibrant cinematography and storytelling to keep viewers engaged amongst the varied distractions in an outdoor setting.”

Just reading the lineup of a summer movie series can make you smile at the memory of seeing these films the first time around: The Terminator, Boyz in the Hood, The Big Lebowski, Best in Show, Do the Right Thing—they’re all screening free somewhere around Brooklyn this summer, from rooftop bars to Red Hook’s Valentino Pier. It’s a gift to be able to watch them all in such picturesque places, and to help you take advantage of them all, we’ve created a printable calendar (first for July and now for August) and listed all the free movies series below, along with the mostly ticketed screenings from Rooftop Films, another OG of outdoor cinema. Happy moviegoing!

Note: All of the following movies are free, except where indicated, and be sure to check each venue’s social media feeds to learn of any rain-related cancellations.
