Did you know that of the top 500 box office movies, only one was produced by a woman of color? The Bushwick Film Festival, now in its 12th year, was founded to try to address dismal stats like this one by amplifying films by traditionally underrepresented storytellers, and it’s back this weekend with a diverse array of free and inexpensive screenings and events. Friday’s lineup consists of Ser Grande, a movie about coming of age in Puerto Rico; a biopic about Bushwick Bill of The Geto Boys, who passed away this year; Vanilla, a road trip romcom; and a horror flick called Camp Wedding. Screenings take place at Syndicated or Brooklyn Fire Proof, and if Friday doesn’t work, check out the rest of the festival’s slate—it’s running through Sunday.
