On Thursday, February 27, Bar Laika in Clinton Hill will present Upsidedown and Backwards, 1980 film by influential visual and performance artist Joan Jonas. The film tells two fairy tales (“The Frog Prince” and “The Boy Who Went Out to Learn Fear”) simultaneously, one backwards and one forwards. Jonas fragments and inverts the tales — as well as interrupts them, with scenes from her own ritualistic performances — juxtaposing innocence and horror, and dreams and nightmare.
The film is just under a half hour and begins at 9pm, so make a night of it by enjoying dinner and drinks beforehand. I recommend arriving early and sitting close to the screen, as it can get pretty crowded and there’s a chance of folks blocking your view if you’re too far back. Bar Laika has a happy hour from 6-7pm, and delicious Japanese curry for just $10.
