Two of Park Slope’s best spots to satisfy your sweet tooth–the stalwart Uncle Louis G’s Italian Ice and the more new-school People’s Pops–both recently closed for the season. But don’t dismay: Those looking for something sweet or savory  on Union Street have two new, ultra-focused options this winter.

First up, the People’s Pops spot near 7th Avenue will return again next spring, but for now, it’s home to Winter Warmers, a pop-up shop dedicated to ice cream’s more weather-appropriate cousins: hot chocolate and s’mores. This being Park Slope, don’t expect to see boxes of Honey Maid lining the shelves. The crisp circles of graham cracker are homemade and come smothered with Brooklyn-born marshmallows in flavors like strawberry, coconut and pumpkin. The seasonal peppermint variety just debuted this week, and the $4 price tag buys you unlimited topping options from the jars of nuts, candies, etc. Combined with spicy dark hot chocolate, or even a coffee-chocolate option for the mornings, these s’mores will blow your childhood campfire treats out of the water.

If you’re in the mood for a slightly less indulgent winter warmer, head down to Union and Fifth, where Brooklyn Porridge Company has set up in the Uncle Louis G’s space.  The Italian ice shop, like People’s Pops, will return with the warm weather, at which time Brooklyn Porridge Co. hopes to move on to a permanent spot elsewhere. Its version of a seasonal treat starts out sounding much healthier, with three bases to choose from: oats, amaranth grain or grits–all whole-grain, dairy-free and gluten-free–boiled to a heart-warming gloopy consistency. But this isn’t the bland hot cereal your mother made you choke down before leaving for school on snowy days. Things get plenty flavorful here, too, as you can top your chosen porridge variety with savory combinations like The Truffled Heart (shaved Parmesan, artichoke hearts and white truffle oil) or sweet options like Fruit & Cream (mixed berries and bananas with Culture yogurt, shaved almonds and maple syrup). Better yet, get creative and make your own two-topping porridge ($6.95), choosing from a wide array of options like cashew butter, bing cherries, maple-bourbon ham and salted dark chocolate.

One small bowl is definitely hearty enough to make for a filling wintertime lunch…well, almost: You might need to walk down the street and get a s’more afterwards.
