On Saturday, July 18, we’re heading south with Brooklyn Brewery for beer-soaked, food-filled tour of Bay Ridge. If you haven’t spent much time in the neighborhood immortalized by Saturday Night Fever, The Total Bay Ridge Immersion is a perfect excuse to check out its eclectic restaurants, waterfront views, and great neighborhood bars—like the four we plan to hit up: Lock Yard, The Wicked Monk, Cebu, and The Kettle Black.

Your Immersion ticket includes a Brooklyn brew at all four spots, plus a packet of local deals and your choice of lunch, all for $25—that’s less than a boozy brunch, and way more fun. There are currently eight food options to choose from: 14-hour pulled pork or a burger on a brioche bun with truffle fries, or a mixed veggie stir-fry over rice from Tie Dye Pig; 2 hot dogs and waffle fries from Lock Yard; 6 wings (any flavor) and fries from The Kettle Black, or a burger, a Reuben or portobello mushroom burger with fries from The Wicked Monk.

Once you purchase a ticket and pick your lunch online, meet us at Lock Yard between 1 and 3pm on the day of the Immersion to collect your envelope of “Walking Around Money.” You’ll use this wad of coupons to cash in your beers, lunch, and deals including 20% off all treats at Robicelli’s. If you’ve never visited them before, now you can finally eat their famous cupcakes right from the source. You’ll also get 20% off any purchase from A.L.C. Italian Grocery, a $3 Brooklyn beer at Tie Dye Pig and at Lonestar Bar & Grill, $25 off a purchase of $50 or more at Consignment Connection, 15% off at Cue Boutique, a complimentary cut with color (good through August) at Bohemian Rose Hair Studio, 20% off your entire regularly priced book purchase at Bookmark Shoppe, 25% off a toy at Kaleidoscope Toy Store, and 20% off all used games and systems at Gotham City Games. During the Immersion you’ll also be able to purchase one of Brokelyn’s South Brooklyn Beer Books, which you can put to use that day.

We’ll be adding more deals, so RSVP on Facebook to stay tuned for updates. And get a ticket now to ensure you get the lunch you want!

If you haven’t already snagged a ticket for our Gowanus Immersion on June 6 with Brooklyn Brewery, where you’ll get four Brooklyn brews and lunch for $25, we’ve got some more juicy details that may sway you.

The early word on beers that’ll be poured at the various bars are: Sorachi Ace at Swan Dive (one of seven new outdoor bars to get your swerve on this summer); Green Market Wheat plus cans of Brooklyn Lager at the Roof at Whole Foods and Summer Ale at Givers and Takers.

We also have a new lunch option between 1 and 3 on Saturday at Runner & Stone. You can choose between a grilled pimento cheddar on their homemade whole wheat pain au lait or grilled gruyere with red wine braised shallots and dijon on rye, with a side of either seasonal slaw or their housemade chips. We have just a few of these tickets available so if this sounds up your alley, you should secure one, stat.

A few more deals have trickled in too, like a large order of any kind of pierogies (except blueberry and chocolate) for the price of a small at Baba’s Pierogies—which we raved about here.

You’ll also get a $22 day pass with gear rental (a $39 value) at Brooklyn Boulders, good till June 13, 20% off all dresses at the 3rd Ave. Calabar Imports, 20% off purchases, excluding custom work, at Twig Terrariams plus 8 more discounts detailed here.

Did we mention you’ll be getting all this for $25?

See you in Gowanus!

Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 6.29.59 AMUpdate: The Gowanus Immersion is sold out, but we’ve got another great Immersion coming to Bay Ridge July 18–come join us!

It’s rare that one of our Immersions coincides with two new bar openings, but we’re excited to say that our Total Gowanus Immersion with Brooklyn Brewery is shaking out to be just one of those neighborhood crawls. On Saturday, June 6, we’ll be hitting up old favorites and spots so new there’s barely any Internet trace of them, like the soon-to-open Swan Dive on the Gowanus Canal, the brand-new Givers and Takers, the excellent Threes Brewing, and the always lovely Lavender Lake.

If you’ve never been on one of our day-long beer and food crawls, it’s basically the best bang you can get for $25 bucks. Once you purchase a ticket online, you’ll have an envelope of WAM–“walking around money”–waiting for you at Three’s Brewing between 1 and 3pm on Saturday, June 6.

Along with your coupons for a free Brooklyn brew at all of the four bars above, you’ll also get your choice of lunch:
-Alabama smoked chicken sandwich or a trio of veggie tacos (fried cauliflower, smoked portabello, sauteed zucchini) at The Roof at Whole Foods

-A mini crab roll with choice of small cup of chowder or fries at Littleneck. (Note though, that the window to get your Littleneck order is between 3 and 5–which is really more like “dunch.” We apologize, but they want to ensure they can serve everyone in a timely manner.)

-A grilled pimento cheddar on whole wheat pain au lait or grilled gruyere with red wine braised shallots and dijon on rye and a side option of slaw or housemade chips at Runner & Stone.  (This option is sold out.)

The deals you’ll be able to cash in include $3 cans of Brooklyn Lager or $5 draught Brooklyn beers at The Roof at Whole Foods, $1 off a cone at Ample Hills, a large order of any kind of pierogies (except blueberry and chocolate) for the price of a small at Baba’s Pierogies, a buy one get one free session during any weeknight at Gotham Archery through July 2, 10% off a $25+ order at Fletcher’s, a $22 day pass with gear rental (a $39 value) at Brooklyn Boulders, 20% off all dresses at the 3rd Ave. Calabar Imports, 20% off purchases, excluding custom work, at Twig Terrariams, 30% off any class at Brooklyn Homebrew, a $4 slice of pie at Four & Twenty Blackbirds, 20% off adult summer classes at the Gownaus branch of Textile Arts Center, and 20% off a bike helmet at 718 Cyclery to protect your pretty noggin when you drink and bike. Just kidding! We don’t want you do to that! But we do want you to day drink with us.

Our Total Crown Heights Immersion sold out days in advance, so get a head start on the Gowanus Immersion, and purchase your tickets now!

On Saturday, May 16, Brooklyn Based and Brooklyn Brewery are headed to Crown Heights for the first Immersion of the year. If you’ve never been on one of our daylong food, drinking, and shopping crawls, here’s how they work—for a mere $25 you get a wad of “walking around money” that entitles you to four of Brooklyn’s best beers at four different bars, your choice of two lunches, and sweet deals around the neighborhood.

Tickets are sold out, so these details are for ticket holders only.  You can always join us without a ticket though–all the bars will be open and we’re happy to give you a pack of deals so long as they last–we have extras. And be sure to get tickets to our Total Gowanus Immersion on June 6 before they disappear, too!

Here is a map of all the stops we’ll be making. The “official stops” where you’ll be consuming the beers and food you’ve paid for are in red, and the deal stops are in orange.

This year, the fun begins at Berg’n, where you can pick up your Immersion cash between 1 and 3pm, then get a Green Market Wheat beer and, if you’ve ordered it, a slow smoked, pulled pork with pommes frites from Mighty Quinn’s Barbecue. From there, you can choose your own adventure, hitting up Covenhoven for your choice of BLAST!, a double IPA, or Sorachi Ace, a saison-style ale; Butter & Scotch for a Chocolate Stout (with the option of upgrading to a beer float for $3!) and Catfish for Summer Ale. If you ordered lunch at Ital Kitchen, one of our favorite Caribbean food joints in Crown Heights, note that it’s right near Butter & Scotch, so you may want to go there first to order your choice of veggie jerk chicken, Brooklyn chow mein, any stew or veggie jerk wrap.

The deals we’ve wrangled include 20% off any purchase of $20 or more Owl & Thistle General Store, a free coffee or tea when you purchase any baked goodie from Cafe Forte; 20% off jewelry at Calabar Imports, 20% off any purchase at Reclaimed Home and 20% off any non-sale items at Lady J Jewelry; 30% off a Five Element acupuncture session at Mountain (which you’ll probably want to save for later, and you can, till August of this year) plus 25% off a selection of drinks the day of the Immersion; $4 Brooklyn beers at 706 Bar and at Two Saints; $3 off an iced latte at Breukelen Coffee House; and 20% off any ice cream treat at Tinto.

We’ll be sending some photo safari clues and inspiration throughout the day for fun and prizes, too, so be sure to follow @brooklynbrewery and @brooklynbased on Twitter for hints. On Monday following the the Immersion we’ll select the coolest pics tagged with #Immersion to win prizes like Brokelyn’s Brooklyn Cocktail Book, a $25 gift cert at Hullabaloo Books, Brooklyn Based totes, Brooklyn Brewery goodies, and 10% off your first service at Deck Salon.

You know it’s almost summer when we announce our annual Immersion season with Brooklyn Brewery, and this year we’re excited to unveil all the neighborhoods we plan to explore at once. We’re still confirming the exact stops, but on each of our Saturday Immersions from 1 to 7pm you’ll get four Brooklyn brews, lunch (your choice of grub like a burger and fries and a vegetarian option), and an envelope stuffed with local deals–what we like to call “walking around money.”

Here are the dates and places we plan to hit with you. Tickets are just $25 a pop–less than you would actually spend on this much fun–and are on sale now!

  • On Saturday, May 16, we’re kicking off our day-long celebrations in Crown Heights
  • Saturday June 6, we’re hitting up Gowanus
  • Saturday, July 18, we’re headed on south to Bay Ridge
  • And on Saturday, September 12, we’ll be clinking our cups one last time in East Williamsburg, the last stop on our 2015 Immersion tour

See you on one of our neighborhood crawls soon. Also, if you own a business and want to be involved in our Immersions, or would like to help spread the word about them in exchange for tickets, let us know.

The Annoyance Theatre teaches classes and hosts weekend shows. Photo: The Annoyance Theatre

When you think about improv classes the first thing that comes to mind might be nothing at all because the prospect of taking one fills you with such deep and abiding terror that your brain goes completely blank. Or, you might dismiss them out of hand as professional development for your pals who fancy themselves the next Tina and Amy or Abbi and Ilana, but off limits for the rest of us.

Not so.

“Improv is a tool,” says Philip Markle, New York executive director of The Annoyance Theatre in Williamsburg. “It’s not an end game. It’s not a wrong or a right. Our goal at The Annoyance is to make you the most powerful fearless version of yourself onstage.”  That power doesn’t exist for just comedians or actors. It’s for everyone in every business, in every industry, with every type of personality. Whether it’s a way to beat shyness, an alternative to another night at the bar, or even as a form of therapy, these classes evoke more than just laughs.

We’re excited, and a little sad, to announce the fourth and final Brooklyn Based-Brooklyn Brewery Immersion of 2014: Saturday, Oct. 11 in Prospect Heights.

It’s been an excellent Immersion season, drinking and eating our way through the South Slope, Greenpoint and Bushwick, and we can’t wait to spend the day hanging out on Vanderbilt Avenue. On this Immersion you’ll get four complimentary beers, one each at Plan B, Woodwork, Dean St. and Berg’n (for a quick detour over to Crown Heights), plus lunch at either Citrico or Dean St. Get your $20 ticket here.

As usual, you’ll get a stack of Walking Around Money in a nifty envelope featuring a map of the neighborhood and all the deals, beers and food specials we have in store for you. Meet us at Woodwork between noon and 2pm to pick up your WAM (consider it your ticket for the Immersion–you won’t get very far without it) and get started on a fantastic fall day in Prospect Heights.  (more…)

We didn’t want anyone to have to choose between their summer vacation and one of our Immersions with Brooklyn Brewery, so after fantastic days spent drinking, eating and exploring the South Slope and Greenpoint in June and July, we took August off and planned The Total Bushwick Immersion for Saturday, Sept. 13.

We’ve lined up a whole new crop of bars, restaurants, cafes and stores to check out, focusing on the area around the Jefferson stop on the L train (no, we’re not calling it Jefftown). Consider this your $20 ticket to an entire day of artsy, boozy, delicious fun.

You’ll start the day by picking up your envelope full of walking around money, or WAM, as we like to call it, at Radio Bushwick, any time between 1pm and 2:30pm. From there, Bushwick is basically your oyster. Your WAM is like Brooklyn Monopoly money, and each bill will score you a different deal around the neighborhood. What do you get? Brooklyn Brewery beers at The Rookery, Radio Bushwick, Three Diamond Door and Brooklyn Fire Proof, and lunch at either The Diggs—your choice of their ridiculously good poutine or Coney fries, which come covered with chili, cheese sauce, mustard and onions (leave off the chili if you like)—or Brooklyn Fire Proof (your choice of a wings basket or a burger and fries). What else? Discounts on everything from coffee, cookies and other baked goods to haircuts, books and handmade goods at spots like Little Skips, Sweet and Shiny and The Shops at The Loom. (See below for the full list—some last for a full year.)

Four years ago we started a summer tradition with Brooklyn Brewery of daylong pub crawls exploring a neighborhood’s coolest bars, shops, and places to eat. We kicked it off on Franklin Street and we can’t wait to head back to the place where we launched this series on Saturday, July 19 for The Total Greenpoint Immersion.

What you’ll experience on this Immersion, for a mere $20, is kind of insane. A Brooklyn beer awaits you at each of these four awesome bars: Beloved, The Diamond, Black Rabbit, and t.b.d., along with lunch at either t.b.d or Jimmy’s so you can stay on your feet, because you’ll have a lot more places to visit. When you arrive we’ll hand you an envelope stuffed with Monopoly-like bills to spend at more than a dozen spots, and some of these deals last a full year so you can come back and explore Greenpoint another day. You’ll save money when you pick up a summer read at Word, perk up your summer wardrobe at In God We Trust and Old Hollywood, treat yourself to the well-made goods at The One Well, get your caffeine fix at Champion Coffee, and more. (See the list of deals to date, below.)
