Kat Christie and Kate MacLauchlan share a dance at their wedding, which was held at Atelier Roquette in Red Hook after ReBar unexpectedly shuttered.
Twirling across the concrete floor of a rustic room lit by dozens of candles, Kate MacLauchlan and Kat Christie, both in elegant white gowns, shared their first dance as a married couple.
The reception, a week later than originally planned, wasn’t what they had initially envisioned. But after going through more than the usual wedding-planning angst, they weren’t complaining.
“I feel like it turned out better than it was supposed to,” shouted MacLauchlan over EMF’s “Unbelievable,” blasting on the loudspeakers of Atelier Roquette in Red Hook.
MacLauchlan and Christie were among more than 100 couples forced to find a new wedding venue after Jason Stevens, owner of ReBar, abruptly closed his DUMBO bar and event space in May. He was sentenced in July to 3 ½ to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion and grand larceny charges after absconding with approximately $150,000 in wedding deposits.
Nearly six months later, most of the so-called “ReBar couples” are married, with stirring stories to tell about the trials of mounting a wedding with little time and little money left in the bank. (more…)

Montana’s Trail House is opening in Bushwick on May 30. Photo: Annaliese Griffin
Montana’s Trail House (Bushwick, 445 Troutman Street, opening May 30) Located in an old service station at Five Points in Bushwick, Montana’s Trail House has the cozy vibe of an upstate cabin, a bench-lined patio in the front for taking your cocktail out into the sunshine, and a menu that includes fried chicken, root beer-braised brisket and a tongue and cheek reuben. Don’t despair, vegetarians, the spring harvest plate and a few other options are far superior to your usual token pasta dish. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to hunker down in, sipping whiskey and chatting up your neighbor come next winter, but not before a long summer of blueberry basil Pimm’s cups on the patio. Oh, and their late night menu, which goes until 3am, includes a corn dog that replaces the usual hot dog with a sausage. –Annaliese Griffin (more…)

Wait out the Halloween craziness, and the amateur hour antics that go along with it, and head out to Tuffet on Friday night for the bar’s first ever Día de los Muertos party. Or, to be more precise Día de los Muertos Musicos. Djs will be spinning all our favorite artists who are no longer with us–Biggie, MJ, Lisa Left-Eye Lopez, Aaliyah and more. Tequila specials and an all-tequila cocktail list are on the menu too, so get ready to get down. Costumes are welcome if you’re still feeling the Halloween spirit, but nothing but a taste for tequila and a willingness to get down is required. Party starts at 9pm.
