This fall we’ll have to say goodbye to Williamsburg’s DIY venue Monster Island. The building that houses the space is being demolished and everyone has to vacate by October 1.
In their own words they are home to “Live With Animals, Secret Project Robot Art Space, Kayrock Screenprinting, Todd P. Practice Spaces, Mollusk Surf Shop, Oneida and a multitude of studios and rehearsal spaces.” For the past seven years, the venue has hosted a summer block party. This Saturday, they will put on their final installment, a farewell of sorts to a long reign of outdoor music and arts, allowing them to go out in style.
The event, which is free thanks in part to a successful Kickstarter campaign, will host a dozen bands plus two art installations, open studios, barbecue and DJs all day. In addition to the concert on the street, there will be music inside the practice spaces and a video installation.
Golden Triangle, a local act with a peppy garage-rock sound, is slated to play outdoors, as are Oneida, a more more psychedelic-sounding band who played at the party last year. There will also be sets from Cult of Youth, who describe themselves as “post-industrial folk,” Knyfe Hyts, who have more of a trippy-but-still-kind-of-metal sound, and the multi-drum act Man Forever, the side project of Oneida member Kid Millions, who you can check out playing a show at Monster Island last year in this video below:
The Monster Island Block Party is this Saturday, September 10, at 128 River Street near North 3rd Street. The festivities start at 1 p.m. and will be going on all afternoon.
