Each weekday morning, Laura Bishop leaves her spacious, airy apartment in Park Slope for an equally enjoyable work space in Lower Manhattan: the library of the Léman Manhattan Preparatory School (LMPS), an innovative private school offering a rich, diverse college preparatory curriculum while promoting international mindedness.

Currently in her fourth year at the LMPS Upper School (grades 5-12), Laura manages the day to day operations of the library, including maintaining its collection, which includes more than 7,000 printed volumes of fiction and non-fiction, along with databases yielding more than 1,000 ebooks and thousands of scholarly journals, substantive full-text publications, videos and images.

Additionally, she teaches an information literacy program to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, in which research projects are tied into the school curriculum. A student advisor, Laura also co-teaches a prep class for the International Baccalaureate Program to 10th grade students (LMPS is a candidate school for the IB Diploma Program) and oversees the biannual school book fair.

Perhaps her favorite part of the job, though, is spearheading interactions between authors and students, including a visit with Newbery Award and National Book Award winner Jack Gantos who wrote Jerry Pigza Swallowed the Key, and an upcoming Skype chat with Minnesota-based Margie Preus, author of Newbery Honor Book, The Heart of a Samurai.

A Brooklyn resident for 13 years, Laura prefers the intimacy and relaxed energy and pace of Park Slope and never considered living in Manhattan when she moved from London, where she worked after graduation from SUNY Geneseo. “I adore Brooklyn and everything it has to offer, especially the proximity to Prospect Park,” she says. “It’s an exciting place to be right now, and the equally vibrant atmosphere of Lower Manhattan is just a few stops away.”
