It’s going to be a Brooklyn homecoming of sorts for critically-acclaimed performers Laura Cantrell and Jennifer O’Connor, when both artists perform at Rough Trade NYC on Oct. 27. Cantrell, who is also best known as the host of The Radio Thrift Shop show on WFMU, makes music that that sounds like traditional country did years before the genre became so commercially popular–her influences are country legends like Kitty Wells and Dolly Parton. Earlier this year, the ex-Brooklyn resident released her latest studio album in No Way There From Here, which I think is her best record to date.

As an added bonus, Jennifer O’Connor, a former Brooklynite who recently relocated to Nyack, N.Y., will be opening the show. Like Cantrell, O’Connor is an artist whose music I’ve grew up with over the last 10 years going back to her early albums The Color and the Light, Over the Mountain, Across the Valley, and Back to the Stars, and her most recent effort I Want What You Want.

Her wonderful brand of indie folk rock and confessional songwriting is in the vein of contemporaries like Ryan Adams. In addition to her own music, O’Connor runs Kiam Records, and the good news is that she is currently working on a new album that will include Yo La Tengo bassist James McNew. This is going to be a great double bill at Rough Trade, and the fact that it’s just $12 is a steal. Go.

Laura Cantrell and Jennifer O’Connor will perform on Monday, Oct. 27th at Rough Trade NYC, 64 N. 9th St., Brooklyn, 9pm, $12.
