Touch a Ship

As part of a sailing event called OpSail, a flotilla of tall ships and navy ships are sailing into New York’s harbor this week, and anchoring at three sites around the city so that the public can climb aboard and explore. Ten amazing schooners, cutters, war ships and navy training vessels from all over the world will be docked in the Red Hook Marine Terminal–the most ships of any NYC locale–and open to the public Saturday through Monday 10am to 4pm. PortSide New York created a guide to this year’s ships, which are more diverse than usual because OpSail teamed up with the U.S. Navy to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the writing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” While you’re there, stop at PortSide’s pop-up on Columbia Street where you can see cool relics of the maritime past.
