If you’re looking for a kid-friendly condominium, Pierhouse is a great option. The new waterfront development holds obvious appeal for grown-ups, who appreciate the well-appointed living spaces and the best views in the city, but it’s the amenities at Pierhouse and in its surrounding neighborhoods that make it a great spot for children and their caregivers. The building features a children’s room with an outdoor play terrace and bicycle storage for all ages.

Pierhouse is right next to one of the fastest growing urban recreation areas in the country, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Brooklyn Bridge Park stretches from the area around Jane’s Carousel between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges southward to Pier 6—and there are plans to expand even further south into Red Hook and beyond.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Environmental Education Center uses interactive, hands-on exhibits to teach kids and adults about the wildlife of the Brooklyn shoreline. Open to school groups during the week, and to families on weekends and outside of school hours, the center features a 250-gallon aquarium that showcases local marine life. A child-friendly touch tank offers visitors an opportunity to gently interact with the animals.

Brooklyn Bridge Park also offers multiple opportunities for outdoor recreation. Basketball courts and a spacious roller rink share East River space on Pier 2. Soccer fields provide even more opportunities to burn off steam, with organized games and leagues taking place throughout the year. During summer, the nearby Pop-up Pool offers a great way to cool off.

Friends and families love to stake out a spot on Picnic Peninsula at Pier 5 for barbecues and parties. And with the Ample Hills Creamery ice cream stand nearby, there’s no need to worry if you forgot to bring dessert.

Smaller children from toddlers to tweens have their own special area of Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 6. Swing Valley features a number of swing areas of different sizes and types, while Sandbox Village and Slide Mountain offer the kind of thrills little kids live for. Meanwhile the Waterlab gives tykes (and parents) a cool way to enjoy the hot weather of summer. For teens, the Pier 6 volleyball courts may be more their speed.

But some days just aren’t park days. For those times when weather or moods intrude, there are still a lot of great options. One is Recess Dumbo, the indoor play space located on Washington Street. Recess Dumbo offers classes, flexible drop-in options, and is a great place to host birthday parties.

Train-obsessed kids will love the New York Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn. This treasure trove of subway lore features carriages from nearly every era of New York’s history. And just around the corner is The Little Gym of Brooklyn Heights, a great place to help your budding gymnasts develop their skills, even if they’re still just crawling.

If your kids have been eating their greens and have earned a treat, Dumbo has a lot of kid-friendly options for snacks and lunches. There’s pizza at Grimaldi’s and Juliana’s, burgers and fries at Shake Shack, and for their sweet tooths, Jacques Torres Chocolate and One Girl Cookies.
