The Red (& Green) Light District

By

If you have never seen the Christmas lights in Dyker Heights, words can’t really do justice to the explosion of LED that overtakes several blocks of houses on 83rd to 86th Streets between 11th and 13th Avenues around this time of year. All we can say is that Clark Griswold has got absolutely nothing on the residents of this neighborhood, some of whom even hire professional Christmas decorators to deck the halls. As you wander among the houses adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and 20-foot-tall toy soldiers, you will ask yourself questions like, “Where do these people store all this stuff during the rest of the year?” and “Is their December ConEd bill more than my student loan debt?” After you check out the lights, hit up Villabate, an Italian bakery that will blow your mind with cappuccino and cannolis , before it closes at 9pm. And, if you’d rather stay warm, check out the Dyker Lights slideshow on our site.
