Off to the Races!

Smell the bourbon? See the hats? Feel the anticipation in the air? It’s Derby Day, everyone!  Luckily, our humble borough has some of the best Kentucky Derby parties north of the Mason Dixon line. The Bell House Derby Party is a legendary, all-day affair, with $6 mint juleps, square dancing, an on-site milliner (BK’s own esteemed La China Loca), and contests for best hats in several categories. If you’re looking for something different, Smack Mellon is hosting their annual Derby Party and Art Auction in DUMBO; the $250 admission for you and a guest provides entertainment by Demolition String Band, the World Famous *BOB*, and a piece of original artwork. It also helps bankroll the organization’s art funding. And if you’re looking for something with a specific Southern flair, you have your pick: Workshop’s 9th Annual Kentucky Derby Party, organized by Southern transplants and housed in Brooklyn Winery’s beautiful new atrium, is a sure-fire win. A $75 ticket to the event gets you eats, a parade of hats, an open mint julep bar for four hours, and the main event itself–but act quickly, they’re well on their way to being sold out. Then there’s Seersucker’s first annual Derby Day Party starting at 4pm, with a helluva spread, seasonal mint juleps, and a contest for best dressed man and woman. There’s no TV, but they will be broadcasting the race via vintage radio, which means this is the perfect event for those who think of Derby Day primarily as an excuse to eat, drink and dress up.
