Rockabus, the New Way to Get to the Rockaways–Coming Soon

By

As stoked as I am for tomorrow’s trip to Rockaway Beach and Boardrockin‘ our beach party with Brooklyn Brewery and the Rockaway Beach Club, I’m almost as excited about Rockabus, the new Williamsburg-to-Rockaway Beach bus services that is starting up soon. Here’s how Sam Morrill, one of the founders of Rockabus, described the service in an email to BB:

The Rockabus will be leaving from Williamsburg near the Lorimer L stop every forty minutes. We will only be serving Rockaway Beach initially (Shore Front Parkway and 86th St.), but we are planning to add service to the rest of the peninsula later in the summer.

Fares will be $10 one way, $18 round trip and tickets will be sold on our website as well as at the pick-up/drop-off locations.

Morrill also said that although they wanted to launch this weekend (and we really wanted that to work out for all you Boardrockers, too!) there are still some logistical hurdles to clear. They are very much hoping to start service next weekend and as soon as they let us know it’s happening, we’ll pass it on to you so you can get tickets. There are so many frozen bananas, Rippers burgers and frozen piña coladas to look forward to, without the A train ride or the Zipcar bill. Check them out on Facebook and for Twitter updates follow @rockabusNYC.

This is awful. Say goodbye to the quiet, peaceful Ft Tilden you once knew

This is great, and 1/3 of the price  of the Hampton Jittney, because here in Rockaway we leave out 2/3 of the Hampton experience.

Just what te 70,000 + year round residents need. More DFD’s flooding the streets and acting like they’ve been here their whole lives. Each year the abuse of local hospitality and the total disrespect these people bring to our neighborhood is getting worse. Please try and come on my porch during a rainstorm this year, so I can show you how I feel.

A RR is right. Gentrification at it’s finest.

Yeah, your a regular fucking hospitality suite. God forbid some nice kids use your porch for shelter. Who the fuck are you, Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino? Gonna chase ’em off your lawn with your shotgun?

I grew up in Rockaway, my parents remain there and everyone in my family thinks the changes are great. People like you are the reason I got out. Lighten up and buy a taco you stupid, inbred motherfucker.

are u kidding me Alison, these people down here are great for local businesses and because they drown out what rockaway has been use to for the past 30 years on our beaches from 86th street to 119th street, I dont think Rockaway will miss your negativity though

I am from this neighborhood and I want you all to come down here. You are all welcome and despite the negativity surrounding this article and what you may see on blogs, the majority of people down here that I know feel the same way. Kieran O’Malley is what we refer to as Boulevard Trash, just want you to get familiar with the Rockaway lingo. You will most likely see him rocking Jorts and a NBA jersey with a dirty mustache, typical of what is “fucking up our neighborhood”

Sorry kieran I don’t rent so I don’t need any luck at all. Some people actually own a property not only that, they make money off of other properties, these people are known as landlords. I happen to fall into that group Kieran Omalley. I appreciate all the good luck though. I also appreciate your boldness for actually sticking your neck out on a blog. You see, I actually know you.

Ha ha ha! the hipsters will soon flee once Bloomberg and Kelly are gone. The crime rate in hipsterhoods will explode as the welfarebabies swarm in looking for ipads, ipods, gold jewelry, etc.  Hee hee hee!

Actually, the reason why the crime rate has gone down in NYC under Giuliani and then Bloomberg is partially because of the end of easy welfare.   NYC’s underclass has been ,and is being shipped out of the city.   Beach Front property is prime real estate everywhere.   Its just recently that NYC decided to promote its beach front property in Queens.  Oh, btw, not too far away a casino has been built in Howard Beach, and more things are coming there…….

I welcome the new influx of people and i agree whole heartedly with BC BNB…we needed some change, and its a welcome change to what was inhabiting our streets which was desolate nothingness and derilicts

Just so long as you  stay down by 86th and make your tacos and I’m fine with this idea.  Don’t come up towards Riis Park and Breezy please!

I just bought a bungalow down in the 20’s.  It’s literally 30 yards from the beach, yet its far enough from the weekend crowds up in the 80’s.  Rockaways are coming alive again.  I am excited to be here and frankly, we are not “gentrification”    If you look at who used the beaches in the early part of the 20th century during the summers, it was the working class Irish in the 80’s and up and working class Jews in the 20’s.  When they stopped coming in the 50’s , Robert Moses decided to move all the poor into public housing to get them out of the city and the rest is history!

Yes.   And by the 70s and 80s, the city, seeking to reduce the number of poor in the Rockaways, demolished block after block, leaving empty blocks with trees on them in Edgemere and Arverne.   Said blocks in recent years have gotten homes, stores, bank branches, etc built on them.
