Soccer in the Summer

If you haven’t already gotten all caught up in Euros fever, there’s still a chance to get involved with Europe’s biggest soccer tournament. The big game, where national teams will be playing for bragging rights and buckets of prize money, is taking place this Sunday at 2:45pm. It’ll feature the winners of the semi-finals happening this week, with Portugal taking on Spain, the winners of the last Euros, on Wednesday, and Germany battling it out with Italy on Thursday. Lately it’s felt like almost every bar with a TV in Brooklyn has been showing the weekend matches, but for the best shouting-at-the-TV vibes I recommend Prospect Heights’ Woodwork, owned by a super-passionate footie fan and serving one of the best drunk-soccer snacks known to man, cheesy bread. Also, Williamsburg’s Iona has a really cute backyard with a TV and Park Slope’s Black Horse Pub, is an expat favorite. If the heavily-favored German team makes it through, I’ve also heard great things about Der Schwarze Kolner in Fort Greene. No matter what, make sure you get to your bar-of-choice early–the big soccer bars are notorious for filling up, and you won’t want to be scrambling for a replacement right before kickoff. –C.A.
