First of all, it was news to me that, since 2011, New York City has had its own charter of the National Women Arm Wresting Organization that has been regularly throwing local, tournament-style competitions in which betting is encouraged and pro wrestling-style antics are the norm. Yeah, I know, it’s the coolest thing I’ve heard in a while, too. Anyway, the eight badass broads who make up 5 Boro Ladies Arm Wrestling (5BLAW for short) are staging their latest event, The Sideshow Brawl, at 3rd Ward on Saturday. In addition to arm wrestling, bearded ladies, mimes and accordions (good god, this sounds amazing!), the party will also provide more pedestrian amenities like BBQ, booze, music and a raffle. There is a $5 suggested donation for entry, and proceeds will benefit The Rockaway Rescue Alliance Shore Soup Project, a grassroots community feeding program that has distributed over $50,000 healthy meals to those in need since Hurricane Sandy. –KH
