To commemorate the months of recovery it’s taken to rebuild coastal areas around New York City, Groundswell, the city’s largest community public art organization, collaborated with teen artists from neighborhoods hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy to design and create murals, which were dedicated this week in Red Hook, Coney Island, Staten Island and the Rockaways. To help them with their creative process, the young artists got pro tips from someone who knows a thing or two about street art, Swoon, a local artist whose wheatpaste, life-size portraits can be spotted on the sides of buildings, stoops and walls around the city. Here’s a slideshow of their handy work.
