To the dragon boats!

On Sunday, take a trip to Hong Kong with only your Metrocard by journeying out to Flushing Meadows Park for the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, now in its 27th year. Starting at 8am and running all day on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, you can watch more than 120 dragon boat teams race for cash prizes and glory, sample traditional Chinese food like steamed dumplings and rice balls, and enjoy live music and dance performances. Admission is free. Later, Pioneer Works is hosting the August installment of its popular Second Sundays series from 4-10pm in its stunning Red Hook space. Its free to attend, although a $10 donation is suggested, and this month includes an intriguing variety of art and sound exhibitions, as well as open studios of in residence artists, and participatory programs like a conversation on black holes, a DIY pinwheel workshop, and stargazing. While you’re at Pioneer Works, you might want to scope out the garden because there is a free eclipse viewing party happening there on Monday, Aug. 21, and this might be the perfect spot to see the phenomenon go down.
