Sunday marks the first night of this year’s Battery Dance Festival, the city’s longest-running free public dance festival, which happens to take place outdoors in Battery Park City against the beautiful backdrop of New York Harbor at sunset. The weeklong festival, now in its 38th year, draws dozens of accomplished dance companies from all over the country and the world, along with some 12,000 spectators, and Sunday’s lineup includes a diverse array of performances from Danuka Ariywansa, Leah Barsky and Christian Correa, Mezopotamya Dans, Dancers Seeking Refuge—Hussein SMKO, and more. The program runs from 7-9pm, and I’d suggest bringing a picnic dinner if you want to do it right.
