Si Se Puede! at BAM

By

On Friday evening, BAM Cinematek kicks off a new weeklong film series, Si Se Puede!, featuring the work of Chicano and Chicana filmmakers like Luis Valdez (La Bamba), Gregory Nava (El Norte), and Lourdes Portillo (The Devil Never Sleeps). The movies showcased chronicle the unique struggles and cultural experiences of the Latinx community, which were largely ignored or misrepresented in film until these trailblazing directors emerged. The series begins on Friday at 7pm with a screening of Valdez’s Zoot Suit, a film about the L.A. Zoot Suit riots that was the first Mexican-American film to be produced by a major studio when it was released in 1981. Tickets are $15 and are available here.
